Senior Software Engineer - Storage Engine - Elasticsearch

About the role

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Elasticsearch Storage Engine team. This fully remote, globally distributed group builds core storage and query technologies for observability workloads, focusing on storage efficiency, query performance, and data layout for object storage.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the architectural evolution of core storage engine components, identifying and fixing performance bottlenecks in indexing layouts, serialization formats, and resource utilization.
• Drive cross‑organizational initiatives to build industry‑leading observability solutions.
• Collaborate with a global team on logs and metrics capabilities, introducing clean coding standards and simplifying complex system behavior.
• Act as a subject‑matter expert and mentor, reviewing issues and pull requests with domain experts.
• Write idiomatic modern Java for Elasticsearch’s codebase.

Required profile

• Proven ability to collaborate across functions and teams in a distributed environment.
• Experience using AI and prompt‑engineering to accelerate development, debug complex systems, and optimise code.
• Track record of implementing novel techniques for indexing, storing, and querying time‑series or log data.
• Strong core Java skills with deep understanding of concurrency primitives and efficient data structures.
• Excellent verbal and written communication, with a collaborative mindset.
